Marketing Alongside The Professionals At Google & Facebook
As digital marketing specialists, we’re always keeping our ears and eyes open for insights from other industry professionals. More recently, we were invited to Facebook’s Holiday Bootcamp which took place in London, followed by the opportunity to travel down to Portsmouth to attend one of many Google Digital Garage events. Read more on what the team learnt, below!
Holiday Marketing Insights With Facebook
Earlier this month, Facebook announced that it would be opening its doors for the Boost with Facebook Holiday Bootcamp, an event designed to support the 140 million businesses using its family of apps each month.
With the all-important holiday shopping season approaching, Facebook hosted its first-ever ‘Holiday Bootcamp’ training program at 17 of its offices worldwide – and our team were lucky enough to be invited.
We took part in a three-hour Holiday Bootcamp which consisted an interactive workshop on how to use Instagram Stories for business, the lowdown on how to engage existing customers as well as attract new ones on Facebook and Instagram and mobile device best practices.
What Did We Learn?
Getting your business into the festive spirit can be challenging, but there are a number of different ways you can get your audience ready for the holidays in the coming weeks. Thanking your followers, sharing season’s greetings and showing off your decorations are just three simple ways you can share the joy across your social media platforms, including on Facebook and Instagram.
But what’s the significance of this?
With a predicted 1.6 billion people on Facebook said to be connected to a small business and 2/3 of Facebook users surveyed saying that they visit the page of a local business at least one a week, it’s important to ensure that your marketing efforts are on point from October through to January.
The importance of personalisation was also repeated time and time again, with Facebook encouraging its users to customise their messages under ‘Business Settings’ to effectively lead customers to your website or WhatsApp Business account. During this workshop, we also learnt about a number of new features including WhatsApp greeting messages, away messages and quick replies, which can be used too easily answer common questions.
To better understand the connection between Facebook and WhatsApp and how both platforms can be used together to drive leads, Sarah at Facebook explained that “Facebook is where you put your billboard, WhatsApp is the digital living room where you pitch your business.”
Instagram For Business
The second and final session of today was named the Holiday Story School, an interactive workshop on how to use Instagram Stories for businesses. This hands-on session was great for Instagram newbies and those who were already using the app for business, featuring a number of Story hacks. Here are some of our favourites!
- Turn Live Photos Into Boomerangs: In order to turn a live photo into a Boomerang, it must have been taken within the last 24 hours. Open Instagram Stories > swipe up > select a live photo from your camera roll > select your ‘photo’ > press firmly on the screen until you see the word “Boomerang” appear
- Add Your Brand Fonts To Stories: Download the Over mobile app
- Get More Colours: Open Instagram Stories > select the brush tool > tap and long-hold any of the default colour options at the bottom of the screen to open the colour slider
- Create A Solid Background Colour: Select your chosen colour > tap and hold on the screen for 1-3 seconds
Also keep in mind that if you make hashtags too small, Instagram won’t recognise them! If you don’t want to ruin your picture by adding tags, cover them with a gif or sticker or camouflage them with the background.
Digital Marketing With Google Digital Garage
The team then headed down to Portsmouth where Google have recently opened their latest Digital Garage, a service to help individuals and businesses increase their “knowledge of all things digital, from websites and tracking to online marketing and beyond”.
During the Digital Garage, the team learnt more about how to build a business’s online visibility using social media and through the distribution of PR and more. Posts need to be written to maximise engagement – including your Instagram uploads, Tweets and Facebook videos.
Images with your updates = 150%+ retweets
Photos of people’s faces = 30% more “likes”
Live broadcasted videos = 3x more views than traditional videos
Your digital footprint is what builds your brand. This includes content created by you such as photos uploaded, statuses posted, videos shared, pages liked, comments made on other content, content you’re tagged in such as blog posts, reviews and news articles and your audiences internet activity such as cookies, browsing history and online purchases. To track what people are saying about your brand, products and/or services, you can use Deseat.me or Google Alerts to send a notification directly to your device of choice.
More tools to help your build your online brand include Google Trends, Audience Finder, Page Insights and Instagram for Business which allow you to explore follower demographics and behaviour, examine paid data and easily view data for regular posts.
To further expand your network, consider the different ways your brand could benefit from Buzzsumo and Followerwonk, a tool that can help you to ‘explore and grow your social graph’ by searching Twitter bios, comparing accounts, matching your activities and contrasting your relationship with competitors and friends.
