Speaking With Our CEO: Where Absolute Digital Media Began
Absolute Digital Media hasn’t always been known as “Absolute Digital Media”. Prior to our rebrand, we were known as SEO Positive. As business continued to escalate, we rebranded and recently moved to a new office located in the business park of Springfield in Chelmsford to help support the agencies continued growth. Our CEO, Ben Austin, explains more about where the agency began, below!
So, what inspired you to start your own digital agency?
“Back in 2007, I had my very own finance company and, having wanted to boost the sites visibility, I partnered with a digital agency. Despite our best efforts, we didn’t see any ROI and so I started to look into various SEO techniques and strategies myself. Using the knowledge I had gained from both the agency and my own research, I took it over myself. Soon after the implementation of the SEO strategy I devised, my finance site landed on the first page of Google. I even secured keywords such as “loans” and “mortgages”!
Of course, the economic financial crash came into play a year later in 2008 and I began to receive hundreds of leads each week which simply couldn’t be placed with the lenders due to the circumstances at the time. I didn’t let this stop me, and instead pivoted the business into a finance lead generation site. As time went on, my friends reached out to me asking if I could help them with their own SEO and so I sold my finance site to a major price comparison business and set up my digital agency.”
Why “Absolute Digital Media”?
“I often get asked why I changed the agencies name to Absolute Digital Media, and there are a couple of reasons for this. Initially, I started out as the CEO of an SEO agency, solely helping businesses to climb up the search engine results pages. However, as we began to expand more and more, I wanted to encapsulate more specialisms into the agency. This is when I changed its name to Absolute Digital Media.
Absolute is also a strong word in itself, meaning “without any doubt” and “without limits”, just like the work we carry out in the office. To me, this is a symbol of trust, showcasing that our experts are the very best at what they do.”
That’s great. Do you remember your first client win? What work did you carry out for them?
“My first client win was like hitting the jackpot and was a great boost of confidence for the agency. My first client was a small B2C company based in Cornwall, who approached SEO Positive looking for support in the set up for a national campaign for generic keywords with highly competitive key terms and a high search volume. The results of the campaign were fantastic, achieving page 1 visibility for the terms “house signs”, “personalise house signs” and several more. As a result, she was able to expand her business and product offerings, which was an excellent achievement from both business perspectives!”
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?
Every business has its challenges, but one of the biggest for me was the initial set up of the agency as many people and businesses weren’t aware of SEO, what it involved and how it would benefit their company. We were also often asked what our fees would cover and about the potential ROI as a result of our services, so it was more about convincing prospects the ways SEO would help to drive their business forward than actually getting the agency up and running.”
…And what’s your biggest achievement as CEO?
“My biggest achievement as CEO is probably the growth of the company and some of the incredible client campaigns the teams have been able to work on. It’s always so exciting when a well-known brand approaches us having seen our work with businesses in the same or similar industry! Also, the support from our clients throughout the Coronavirus outbreak in a time where they are forced to pivot their own business strategies. During this time of uncertainty, we’ve been giving back to our clients, providing additional service offerings to offer as much help as we can. In fact, there are so many great memories and achievements that it’s difficult to choose just one!”
The last few months have been a challenge for the best of businesses. How are you supporting your clients through COVID-19?
“COVID-19 has presented a pretty tough time for everyone and, as an award winning marketing agency, we’ve wanted to help as many businesses as we can, much like those that helped me when I first began my online marketing venture!
We’ve helped numerous brands through this difficult time and continue to do so for as long as we remain in lockdown. We’ve helped start up business get firmly on their feet and we’ve supported our existing clients such as those in the events industry that have had to completely remodel their business.
Our design and developments have even worked on brand new websites during this time to help get even more businesses online, whilst our SEO teams have been diversifying various campaign strategies to target new products, features and services during this time.
As a result of our hard work, we’ve received some amazing client testimonials and believe that this has enabled us to prove that we’re not just a digital agency for our clients, we’re their partner. It’s safe to say it has been all hands-on deck!”

“Our company motto for both Absolute Digital Media and our clients throughout COVID-19 has been ‘survive, revive and thrive’ and we truly believe that the digital marketing industry will come out of isolation strong than ever.
