What You Need To Know About The May 2020 Core Algorithm Update

googles latest algorithm update

Despite Coronavirus, over the last couple of weeks there has been an increase in speculation that Google would soon be updating its algorithm and we were right.

Yesterday evening (4, May 2020), Google’s Search Liaison Danny Sullivan confirmed that a core algorithm update would begin to roll out across the search engine over the next 2 weeks.

Similar to Google’s previous core updates, the latest update was named the “May 2020 Core Update”.

A couple of hours later, Danny confirmed that the May 2020 Core Update had begun to roll out across the SERPs.

The Google Algorithm & Pandemic

At the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many questioned whether Google would pause its core updates. We can now officially confirm that the answer is in fact no; Google will not be pausing any of its updates.

But, it’s not necessarily a bad thing for Google to update its core algorithm amid mass uncertainty.

Whilst it’s too early to say exactly how the latest core update will impact the SERPs and SEO in general, such updates often have a misunderstood purpose of improving the relevancy of the search results.

If you’ve recently updated the content on your site, it may move up in rankings, which is great news for your business!

Even though Google haven’t commented on why they released a core update now, earlier on in the day they Tweeted that:

“Google Search has never seen as many searches for a single topic continue over a sustained period as is happening now with COVID-19.”

“Many searches are for news about what’s happening in local areas, such as sheltering updates or the latest on testing.”

Essentially, the pandemic has rehabilitated what people need from the search results.

What To Expect In The Coming Days

What To Expect In The Coming Days

There are likely to be some significant shifts in the SERPs over the coming days and whilst it’s too early to speculate what changes will be made to search, it’s likely that some businesses will see significant rankings shifts.
