A family-run retailer against better-funded rivals and the high street

Eden’s Gate is a family-run CBD supplement retailer founded in the United Kingdom in 2018, trading at edensgate.co.uk. The range covers CBD oils, gummies, balms, creams, teas, coffee and flower, sold direct to consumer across the UK and internationally. The business also stocks adjacent wellness lines including shilajit and mushroom coffee.

The company sits in the direct-to-consumer segment of the UK CBD market, competing with specialist online retailers such as Blessed CBD, Naturecan and CBDfx, and with high street pharmacy and health chains including Boots and Holland & Barrett that carry third-party CBD ranges.

01 Decision one

Build authority through consumer research, not product claims

The campaigns were built on food, drink, sleep, stress and lifestyle data, with Eden’s Gate positioned as the commissioning source and expert commentator. The brand earned its citation by supplying the research and the quote, not by claiming an outcome. The rejected alternative was product-led press releases and CBD explainer content pitched to health desks: that generates trade coverage and little else, and every placement carries CAP Code exposure.

02 Decision two

Prioritise international syndication over UK-only volume

Campaign angles were chosen for their portability. Longevity, sleep, anxiety and seasonal food behaviour translate across markets without localisation, which meant a single asset could be picked up by UK nationals, US lifestyle publishers and non-English-language outlets from the same outreach round. The rejected alternative, a UK-only target list, would have produced a tighter topical profile and roughly a fifth of the coverage.

03 Decision three

Target lifestyle and health desks rather than cannabis trade press

Outreach went to consumer lifestyle, food, wellbeing and entertainment desks at mainstream titles. Metro, Time Out, Hello, Glamour, the Evening Standard, Yahoo and The Kitchn all carry Eden’s Gate citations from this programme. The rejected alternative was the cannabis and CBD trade press and the affiliate review sites that dominate the category: those placements are cheap to obtain and correspondingly cheap in Google’s assessment.

04 Decision four

Run digital PR against the commercial SEO roadmap, not alongside it

Campaign timing and anchor strategy were set against the pages the SEO team was working to move, so authority landed where it could be converted into rankings on commercial terms. The measure of the programme was never coverage volume, it was movement on the keywords that sell product. The rejected alternative was treating digital PR as a brand awareness line item measured on reach and impressions: reach is easy to report and impossible to bank.

The results

Rank one on the category's highest-volume commercial terms

The trajectory matters more than the endpoint. Organic traffic compounded steadily rather than spiking on individual placements, rising from 1,330 monthly visits at the outset through 4,775 and 8,766 to 9,446. Every one of those visits arrived on terms Eden’s Gate is prohibited from bidding on, which means there is no paid route to buy the same traffic at any price.

UK top-three rankings tell the same story with less noise: 11 keywords at the start, 41 at the first checkpoint, 114 at the next, 126 by the end of the campaign period. Over the same window, keywords in positions four to ten rose from 46 to 103. Referring domains grew from 73 to 361 and Domain Rating from 24 to 33.

The authority is still converting. Eden’s Gate currently holds 20 non-branded top-three UK rankings on terms above 100 monthly searches, 12 of them at position one, including rank one for cbd balm at 1,700 monthly searches and cbd tea at 1,600, the two highest-volume topical terms in the category, plus weed gummies uk, strong cbd gummies, cannabis gummies uk, cbd balm for pain, cbd coffee uk, pure shilajit uk and shilajit resin uk. Two of those wins sit on terms Ahrefs rates at difficulty 54 and 66, among the hardest commercial keywords in UK CBD.

Live placements verified in the Ahrefs backlink index; also includes The Scottish Sun (DR 77) and The Irish Sun (76). The clearest example of the approach was a campaign built around the documented daily diet of Jeanne Calment, the French supercentenarian who lived to 122. Placed with Eat This, Not That, it moved through that outlet's syndication network to Yahoo Lifestyle and Mashed, then to Navbharat Times, part of the Times of India group, which published a Hindi-language version citing Eden's Gate in Devanagari script. One asset, one outreach round, four continents.

What Eden's Gate say

Frequently asked questions

Digital PR for CBD brands, answered

How much does digital PR cost for a CBD brand?

Cost is driven by ideation and market count, not outreach volume. Campaigns in restricted categories need original research rather than product angles, and each additional territory adds a separate media list and outreach round. A single-market programme running one campaign a quarter sits at the lower end. Multi-market programmes with monthly campaigns sit considerably higher.

How long does digital PR take to affect rankings?

Expect six to nine months before coverage converts into meaningful movement on commercial keywords. Early coverage builds the authority that later coverage compounds against, which is why judging a programme on its first two quarters produces the wrong answer. For Eden’s Gate, top-three UK rankings reached 41 keywords at the first checkpoint and 126 by the end of the campaign period.

Can you advertise CBD products in the UK?

No. Google Ads and Meta both prohibit CBD product advertising in the UK, and CBD sits within the Food Standards Agency novel foods regime with CAP Code restrictions on health claims. Organic search, earned media and owned channels are the practical routes to acquisition, which is why authority building carries disproportionate weight in this category.

What kind of content gets CBD brands coverage in national media?

Consumer research on adjacent lifestyle topics rather than content about CBD. Studies on sleep, food behaviour, stress, seasonal habits and travel place with lifestyle and food desks at national titles. Eden’s Gate secured coverage in Metro, Time Out, Hello and the Evening Standard through this approach. Product-led releases place with trade media and little else.

Does digital PR still work now that AI Overviews are answering queries?

Yes, and its role has changed. Language models cite third-party sources far more heavily than brand websites, so the coverage digital PR earns is now a direct input into AI visibility rather than only a ranking signal. Absolute Digital Media measures both, using Ahrefs Brand Radar to track which prompts surface a brand and which surface competitors instead.

Why do CBD brands rank for so few commercial keywords?

Because authority is the constraint, not content. UK CBD commercial terms are contested by retailers with years of accumulated referring domains and by high street chains with brand-level trust. A new domain producing category content ranks nowhere until its authority profile can compete, which is why link acquisition and content production have to run against a single roadmap.

What is share of voice in AI search and how is it measured?

Share of voice measures how often a brand is named in AI-generated answers to a defined prompt set, relative to named competitors. Ahrefs Brand Radar samples responses per platform and per market. In the UK CBD category the leaders differ between ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, so the metric has to be tracked platform by platform to be actionable.

How do you measure the results of a digital PR campaign?

Against commercial ranking movement and the positions held on category head terms, not coverage volume or estimated reach. For Eden’s Gate the measure was top-three keyword count, which rose from 11 to 126, alongside rank one for cbd balm and cbd tea. Placement counts are an input. They are not the result.
