A new brand with no authority and no paid route

MegaPleasure is an online adult retailer supplying sex toys, lingerie and adult clothing to UK and international customers, trading at megapleasure.co.uk.

The business launched as a new brand into a category with no shortage of established competitors, several of them operating for a decade or more with link profiles to match. It had no domain authority, no brand recognition and no paid acquisition route, because adult retail is excluded from every major advertising platform.

01 Decision one

Start from the calendar the press already publishes

The team looked at what UK consumer journalists reliably cover and when, rather than at what the client wanted to say. Advent calendars attract close to a thousand UK articles across a single autumn, spanning beauty, health, wellness, food and drink. That was a guaranteed annual editorial slot with an obvious gap in it. The rejected alternative was originating a topic and persuading desks to care: building into a subject publishers already plan for removes the hardest part of the pitch.

02 Decision two

Invent a product rather than commission research

Instead of producing a study, the team specified and built a physical product designed to be covered: a four-foot sex toy advent calendar containing over £1,000 of stock, one of the largest in the world, with a dedicated landing page and product photography created alongside it. The rejected alternative was a data-led campaign. Research earns a mention in a roundup. A product that is itself remarkable earns the roundup entry, the product photography, the follow-up and the sale.

03 Decision three

Build the campaign to be bought, not just covered

The product was a real, purchasable item with a live product page, which meant every gift guide placement carried commercial intent rather than brand awareness. Outreach was tailored per market to reflect local pricing, availability and how customers in that territory could buy it. The rejected alternative was a stunt with no commercial route: publicity products that cannot be purchased generate coverage and nothing else, and journalists in the gifting space will not include a product readers cannot get.

04 Decision four

Position a named expert alongside the product work

The client’s sex and relationship expert, Charlotte Johnson, was built into the wider programme as the quotable voice for reactive commentary, which kept coverage accruing between campaigns and gave the brand standing beyond a single product story. The rejected alternative was running product PR alone: a product campaign is a spike, a named expert is a permanent asset, and Glamour credits her by name.

The results

Built to be covered rather than pitched to be covered

Every metric started at zero, which makes the trajectory unusually clear. Referring domains went from four at launch to 2,371, with 890 of those arriving in the single month the advent calendar campaign ran. Domain Rating rose from 11 to 44 across the programme, a gain of 33 points that would normally take a new domain in a competitive category several years to accumulate.

Search visibility followed the authority. Semrush records UK organic keywords rising from 41 to 2,739. Ahrefs records UK keywords in positions one to ten rising from zero to 389, including 33 in the top three.

The coverage followed the shape of the design. Refinery29 gave the product a dedicated article on its own URL rather than a roundup entry. BuzzFeed included it at Domain Rating 91. The Sun ran it in its best sex toy advent calendars selection. Marie Claire covered it in both the UK and Australian editions. Journalist responses to the pitch included “what a great alternative to a traditional advent calendar” and “this is easily the best thing I have ever seen”, in a category where most outreach is ignored, that is the measure of whether the idea was right.

The sixteen verified national placements are the editorial core; the referring domain totals include syndication and secondary pick-up. Nak-Ed ran the calendar in New Zealand under a headline describing a four-foot calendar worth a thousand dollars, and Erotic Trade Only asked whether it was the world’s most expensive.

What MegaPleasure say

Frequently asked questions

Digital PR in unadvertisable categories, answered

How does a new adult brand build authority when it cannot advertise?

By earning editorial coverage on merit rather than acquiring links. MegaPleasure launched with four referring domains and reached 2,371, taking Domain Rating from 11 to 44, on the strength of a product built specifically to be newsworthy. Paid channels are closed to the category and the link building that exists in it is largely discounted by Google.

Is it worth creating a physical product for a digital PR campaign?

Often, yes, and it is under-used. A product earns the coverage, the photography and the gift guide placement, and it can be purchased, which a study cannot. MegaPleasure’s advent calendar produced a dedicated article on Refinery29 and coverage across BuzzFeed, The Sun and Marie Claire in two territories.

How do you find campaign ideas that are guaranteed to get coverage?

Work backwards from the publishing calendar. Consumer desks commit to seasonal fixtures every year, and most are unrepresented in restricted categories. Advent calendar coverage attracted close to a thousand UK articles in a single autumn with no adult entry worth including, which is the gap the campaign filled.

Can adult brands get coverage in mainstream national media?

Yes, on editorial merit rather than on commercial terms. MegaPleasure earned placements in BuzzFeed, Refinery29, Cosmopolitan, Metro, Lifehacker and Verywell Mind. What made them possible was giving journalists something worth covering rather than asking them to cover a retailer.

How much does digital PR cost for an adult or restricted-category brand?

Cost is driven by ideation and, where relevant, production, rather than by outreach volume. Building a physical campaign asset costs more than commissioning research and produces a different order of coverage. Absolute Digital Media scopes retainers against the commercial rankings and revenue the campaigns are built to support.

How long does digital PR take to work for a new domain?

Authority moves before rankings do. MegaPleasure’s referring domains and Domain Rating rose sharply on the back of a single campaign, while UK top-ten rankings built more gradually to 389 keywords. Expect the link profile to move first and the search visibility to follow it by two to three quarters.

Does digital PR help with AI search visibility in restricted categories?

More than in any other sector. AI systems apply additional caution to commercial sources in sensitive categories and assemble answers from health publishers and consumer titles instead. MegaPleasure is cited on Verywell Mind and credited by name in Glamour, which no retailer site can generate for itself.

How do you measure the results of a digital PR campaign?

Against authority gained and rankings won, not coverage volume. For MegaPleasure the measures were referring domains, which rose from four to 2,371, Domain Rating, which rose from 11 to 44, and UK organic keywords, which rose from 41 to 2,739. Placement counts are an input. They are not the result.

What could you make that a journalist would want?

If you are launching into a category the advertising platforms will not take and the press will not cover on commercial terms, the conversation worth having is about what you could make that a journalist would want anyway.
