PPC for travel brands, budgeted by the season, not the month

Travel is the category where a flat monthly budget does the most damage, because the year is not flat and never has been. Inbound peaks as the weather cools, outbound peaks as it heats up, Ramadan and Eid move both of them every year, and the money has to move with all of it rather than arrive in twelve equal instalments.

    Why a specialist

Travel PPC is not generalist PPC

Paid media for a travel brand is bought against a season rather than a month, and usually against two seasons running in opposite directions at once. The inbound side builds through the cooler months and falls away in the summer. The outbound side does the reverse, as residents leave in the heat. One budget can serve both if it is planned as a year, and it will serve neither if it is divided into twelve equal parts. It is one of the disciplines on our PPC offer, run for the brands in our travel work.

The account structure follows from that. Campaigns are split by direction before anything else, then by source market, because an inbound campaign is bought in another country at another time of day in another language, with a lead time that looks nothing like the resident booking a long weekend. Then there is the question every travel account has to answer honestly, which is how much to spend defending your own name against the booking platforms that bid on it, and how much to put into the demand you do not have yet.

    How the work runs

Plan the year, then buy the season

We start with the calendar rather than the keyword list, because in travel the calendar decides where the money should be. The year is mapped by direction first, then the peaks, the shoulders and the troughs are costed, then Ramadan and Eid are placed on this year’s dates rather than last year’s. Only then is the account built, split by direction and source market, with the measurement connected before any spend goes live, including call tracking, since a great many travel bookings still begin with a phone call.

Brand defence is costed openly rather than hidden inside a performance number, because spending to appear above a booking platform on your own name is sometimes the right call and sometimes an expensive habit. Talk to our team about which weeks of your year the budget should be carrying.

    Questions

    Travel PPC, answered

What does travel PPC actually cover?

Paid search and paid social for operators, DMCs, hotels, agencies and attractions, planned by direction and season rather than by month, and managed against enquiries and direct bookings instead of clicks or impressions.

It also covers the awkward decision every travel account has, which is how much to spend defending your own name against the platforms bidding on it.

Why do you keep saying the budget should be annual?

Because travel demand in this market is sharply seasonal in two opposite directions at once, so an equal monthly budget will inevitably overspend through the weeks that needed it least and run short through the ones that carry the year.

Planning the year does not mean committing it. It means knowing which weeks matter before you are standing in them.

Should we just switch everything off over the summer?

Only on the side of the business that actually goes quiet, since the summer collapses inbound leisure demand while being the strongest outbound period of the year as residents travel to escape the heat.

For most brands here the money moves rather than stops. Cutting the whole account in July is how an outbound peak gets missed entirely.

How do Ramadan and Eid affect a paid account?

They change behaviour, timing and booking windows, and because the dates move against the ordinary calendar each year, an account that simply reuses last year’s schedule will be bidding hardest in the wrong weeks.

Eid is a short and intense window. The creative, the landing pages and the budget all need to be in place before it opens rather than during it.

Do we need different campaigns for different source markets?

For inbound, almost always, because a traveller planning a UAE trip from a European source market and one planning it from a regional one are reached at different times, in different languages and with very different lead times.

It is also the cleanest way to see which markets are genuinely profitable. Merged into one campaign, a weak market hides behind a strong one.

Is it worth bidding on our own brand name?

Usually yes in this sector, though not for the reason most people assume, because the booking platforms and aggregators bid on operator and hotel names and will happily collect a traveller who was already looking for you.

We cost it openly rather than burying it in a blended figure. It is a defensive line, and it should be judged as one.

How do you measure paid media when the booking completes elsewhere?

By agreeing up front what can honestly be attributed and what cannot, then measuring enquiries, direct bookings and call volume, with tracking connected before the spend starts rather than retrofitted afterwards.

Where a booking lands on a platform we cannot see, we say so. A sector full of intermediaries punishes flattering measurement eventually.
