Digital PR for schools, earning a place on the list

When a family new to the country searches for schools, the pages that answer them are usually not schools. They are guides, roundups and relocation resources, and a place on one of those lists is earned rather than bought, which is what digital PR for an institution is actually for.

    Why a specialist

Education digital PR is not generalist digital PR

Digital PR for an institution is media relations pointed at the places that build a family’s shortlist: the city and community guides, the relocation resources that newly arrived families read, the parenting and family titles, and the sector press. It earns three things at once, which are the mention a parent reads, the authority link behind it and the corroboration an AI assistant leans on when it is asked to name schools in an area. It is one of the disciplines on our digital PR offer, run for the institutions in our education work.

The constraint here is editorial rather than promotional. An editor will run a genuine opening, a new campus, a named appointment with a real track record, or a piece of data that tells a relocating family something they did not know, and will not run a rewritten prospectus. We keep the angles to what is actually happening at your institution and to what you can evidence, and anything we cannot stand behind is left out rather than softened.

    How the work runs

A real angle, evidenced, then pitched narrowly

We start from what is genuinely happening at your institution, because an opening, a new campus, a named appointment or a defensible piece of data will run and a rewritten prospectus will not. The angle is then checked against what you can actually evidence, and pitched to a short list of titles and guides that families in your catchment really read rather than to everybody with an email address.

Alongside that we work on the guides and community resources that already rank for the searches you want, because getting onto an existing list is often faster and more valuable than earning a feature. Talk to our team about which lists your competitors are on and you are not.

    Questions

    Education digital PR, answered

    What is education digital PR?

The practice of earning coverage and authoritative links for an institution through stories editors actually want, aimed at the guides, relocation resources and family titles that a newly arrived parent reads while they are building a shortlist.

It earns the mention, the link behind it and the corroboration an assistant uses. Those three tend to arrive together or not at all.

Why do guides matter so much in this sector?

Because the pages that rank for the searches a new family runs are usually lists of schools rather than individual schools, so being inside the list puts you in front of that demand without having to outrank a publisher who has held the position for years.

It is also where assistants look. A guide placement does double duty now.

What kind of stories actually run?

Genuine openings and new campuses, named appointments with a track record behind them, a facility or programme that is actually new, and data that tells a relocating family something practical they did not already know.

What does not run is a rewritten prospectus sent out as news. Editors here see a great deal of that.

We are a small institution with no news. Is there anything to pitch?

Usually more than you think, because the most useful angles in this sector are rarely announcements and are far more often something you already know that a family arriving from another country would find genuinely practical.

That is a data or insight angle rather than a news one. It also tends to earn better links than an announcement would.

How does PR fit around the admissions calendar?

It has to run ahead of it, because the guides and lists that matter are compiled and refreshed on their own schedule rather than yours, and a placement earned after a window has closed is a placement working for next year.

So the pitching starts well before the demand does. The coverage then sits there doing its job when families arrive.

How is digital PR different from link building?

Digital PR earns coverage and links through stories an editor wants to publish, while link building is the broader discipline of growing authority, including the directory and community listings that will never be a story but still need to be right.

They overlap and we run both. See Link Building for Education.

    How do you measure it?

On the relevance and authority of the coverage, the links earned, the referral traffic it sends and the curriculum and campus rankings that follow, rather than on a count of placements that flatters a report.

For an institution we also watch whether the coverage gets you into the guides an assistant quotes. That is increasingly where a shortlist comes from.
