PPC for automotive, bought against the call, not the click

Paid search is the fastest lever an automotive business has, and the one most often pointed at the wrong thing, because a used car sale, a rental booking and an air conditioning repair are three different buys sharing one budget. We plan them separately and measure them on calls and bookings, since a very large share of automotive enquiries here never touches a form.

    Why a specialist

Automotive PPC is not generalist PPC

Paid media for a car business is really three accounts wearing one name. A used car buyer is months from deciding and expensive to reach, because the marketplaces and the manufacturers are bidding alongside you. A rental booking is immediate, date led and fought over inside the travel aggregators. A workshop enquiry is local, urgent and overwhelmingly a phone call. Those need different structures, different landing pages and different definitions of success. It is one of the disciplines on our PPC offer, run for the businesses in our automotive work.

The two things a European brief usually misses are the feed and the calendar. An inventory account lives or dies on whether the vehicle feed matches the forecourt, because a campaign advertising a car that sold on Tuesday wastes money and irritates the buyer. And the year has two separate peaks, since the heat drives servicing demand while the cooler months carry showroom footfall, so a flat monthly budget spends most of itself in the weeks that needed it least.

    How the work runs

Connect the phone, then buy the season

Call tracking goes in first, before a single advert runs, because an account that cannot see its phone enquiries is optimising towards the smaller and less representative half of its own results. Then the account is split by business line, since sales, servicing and rental behave nothing like each other, with geography tightened to each branch and the vehicle feed monitored rather than assumed. Only then does the budget get shaped around the calendar, which in this sector means funding the servicing season and the showroom season separately.

Nothing goes live pointing at a page that disagrees with the advert, because in an inventory business that is the most expensive mistake available. Talk to our team about which weeks of your year paid media should be carrying.

    Questions

    Automotive PPC, answered

What does automotive PPC actually cover?

Paid search and paid shopping for dealerships, workshops, parts businesses and rental fleets, planned as separate accounts because a vehicle sale, a service booking and a rental reservation behave nothing like each other and need different structures. Paid social sits alongside it and often does the heavier lifting for stock.

We treat the lot as one budget with three jobs. The split between them is the first thing we argue about and usually the most valuable decision in the account.

Should a dealership bid on broad car terms?

Rarely, and almost never as the first thing, because the broad category searches put you in an auction against the marketplaces and the manufacturers for somebody who is still months away from making any kind of decision. The money goes much further nearer the decision.

Specific model and trim searches, part exchange and valuation queries, finance questions and your own branch terms all convert harder and cost less. We would rather buy those properly than spread thinly across a category.

Why does call tracking keep coming up?

Because a very large share of automotive enquiries in this market arrive by phone or by message rather than by form, and an account that cannot see those calls is optimising towards the smaller and less representative half of its own results. It is the first thing we connect.

Workshops and rental desks are the clearest cases, where the call is the booking. Without tracking, the campaigns that actually work look like the ones to turn off.

How do you handle a stock feed that changes daily?

By treating the feed as part of the account rather than as an IT problem, because a campaign advertising a car that sold on Tuesday wastes budget, irritates the buyer and quietly teaches the platform the wrong thing about what converts. Feed accuracy is monitored, not assumed.

The same discipline applies to rental availability and to service pricing pages. If the advert and the destination disagree, the spend is already lost.

How should the budget be split across the year?

Against the calendar rather than evenly, because the heat drives a servicing and air conditioning season while showroom footfall and anything involving standing outside belongs to the cooler months, which means the two halves of the business peak at opposite ends of the year.

Creative, landing pages and extensions have to be ready before each season starts rather than during it. The servicing peak is the most predictable thing in the automotive year and the most frequently missed.

Is rental advertising different from dealership advertising?

Substantially different, because rental demand is dated and immediate, competes inside the travel aggregators as much as inside search, and is often booked before the traveller has even landed, which makes lead time and availability part of the bidding decision. Monthly rental is a different account again.

That one behaves far more like a lease, with a longer consideration period and a resident rather than a visitor at the other end. Folding the two together is a common and expensive mistake.

How quickly does automotive PPC produce anything?

Faster than anything else available, usually within days for servicing and rental where the intent is immediate, though a used car campaign takes longer because the buyer is working through a decision that lasts weeks rather than minutes. The measurement has to be in place first.

That includes call tracking, which takes a little work at the start. We would rather build it properly than report clicks as a result.
