Digital PR for automotive, earning the opinion you cannot buy

A great deal of what a buyer believes about a dealership, a workshop or a rental brand was decided by a review, a roundup or a community thread rather than by anything that business published. Digital PR is the work of being in those places, through launches, angles and data an editor genuinely wants rather than a rewritten press release.

    Why a specialist

Automotive digital PR is not generalist digital PR

Digital PR for a car business is media relations pointed at the places that shape what people believe about cars: the motoring press, the city and lifestyle titles, the roundups and best of lists, the owner and enthusiast communities and the review platforms. It earns three things at once, which are the mention a buyer reads, the authority link behind it and the corroboration an assistant leans on when somebody asks it for a recommendation. It is one of the disciplines on our digital PR offer, run for the businesses in our automotive work.

The sector specific difficulty is that automotive is drowning in material. Every manufacturer, importer and dealer group here produces a steady stream of announcements, so a launch on its own is not a story and an editor will ignore it. What does run is something only you could have said: a pattern in the data you already hold, a genuine first, a restoration, a person worth writing about, or a proper answer to a question the market keeps asking and nobody has addressed.

    How the work runs

Find what only you could say, then pitch it narrowly

We start inside the business rather than at the target list, because in a category this noisy the only thing that travels is something nobody else could have said. That is usually a pattern in the data you already hold, a restoration or a genuine first, a person with a real story, or an answer to a question buyers keep asking and nobody has addressed properly. The angle is then checked against what you can actually evidence, and pitched to a short list of titles your buyers read rather than to everybody with an inbox.

The roundups and best of lists get their own programme, because for most automotive searches with buying intent those articles are the search result. Talk to our team about which lists your competitors are in and you are not.

    Questions

    Automotive digital PR, answered

    What is automotive digital PR?

The practice of earning coverage and authoritative links for a dealership, workshop or rental business through stories editors genuinely want, in the motoring, city and lifestyle titles that shape what a buyer believes before they ever contact anybody. It earns three things at once.

The mention a buyer reads, the authority link behind it and the corroboration an assistant uses when it recommends somebody. Those arrive together or not at all.

Our launches never get picked up. Why?

Because automotive is a category drowning in announcements, with every manufacturer, importer and dealer group here producing a steady stream of them, so a launch on its own carries no information an editor could not get from ten other inboxes. The launch needs something attached to it.

A pattern in your own data, a person, a restoration or an answer to something the market keeps asking will all travel. The opening on its own will not.

What kind of stories actually work for a car business?

Things only you could have said, which in practice means a pattern in the data you already hold, a genuine first, a restoration or a piece of work worth photographing, a person with a real story, or an answer to a question buyers keep asking. Seasonal and climate angles work well here too.

What does not work is a specification sheet sent out as news. Editors in this market see an enormous amount of that.

Do the roundups and best of lists matter?

They matter more than almost anything else, because the search for the best dealer, the best workshop or the best rental company returns a list written by somebody else, and being inside that list beats trying to outrank it. It is also where the assistants read from.

A place in a list that already ranks is authority, demand and corroboration in one. That is why it is worth working for rather than buying.

Is a paid review or a sponsored post the same thing?

No, and it is worth keeping the two completely separate, because a paid placement is advertising and it behaves like advertising: it leaves a footprint, it carries no editorial judgement and a reader who works out it was bought discounts it entirely. We work on editorial merit.

That is slower and it holds. A placement that has to be explained later was never worth the money.

How is digital PR different from link building?

Digital PR earns coverage and links through stories, while link building is the broader discipline of growing authority, including the listings, profiles and community presence that will never be a story but still do real corroborative work. They overlap and we run both.

See Link Building for Automotive. For most automotive businesses the two are planned as one programme with two methods.

    How do you measure it?

On the relevance and authority of the coverage, the links earned, the referral traffic, and the enquiries and bookings that follow it, rather than on a placement count that tells you how busy we were instead of what changed. We also watch which lists you end up inside.

That matters increasingly, because a mention inside a ranking roundup is where an assistant tends to read from. One of those is worth several outside.
