AI Visibility for law firms, when the answer names one firm

A client with a problem increasingly asks an assistant to explain it before they ask a lawyer, and what comes back is an explanation and a short list rather than a page of options. GEO is the work of being named in that answer, which depends on what the wider web says about your firm and your people as much as on what you publish.

    Why a specialist

Law firm GEO is not generalist GEO

GEO for a practice is Generative Engine Optimisation applied to a recommendation rather than a ranking. Somebody asks an assistant what to do about an unpaid final salary or a stalled property purchase, and the answer explains the position and then suggests where to go. The model builds that from what it can read confidently, which is your site, your profiles, the directories, the business press and whatever has been written about your individual lawyers. It is one of the disciplines on our GEO offer, run for the practices in our legal work.

Legal changes the job in one specific way. The question a client puts to an assistant is usually the jurisdiction question, because the mainland, the DIFC and ADGM are separate systems and the client cannot tell which applies, so the firm whose content answers that cleanly is the firm a model has a reason to cite. The other half is your people, since an assistant asked to recommend a lawyer is looking for a named individual it can corroborate.

    How the work runs

Agree the facts, then earn the citation

First the facts, because an assistant cannot name a firm it cannot confirm: office details, practice scope, credentials and the individual lawyers made consistent across the site, the directories and the professional profiles. Then the questions, written and structured so a model can lift a clean answer about which system a matter sits in and what usually happens next.

Only then the authority work, which is the coverage and commentary a model treats as corroboration. Measurement is tracked question monitoring rather than a rank report, because the useful thing to know is whether you appear when somebody describes a problem the way your clients describe it. Questions

    Law firm GEO, answered

What is GEO for a law firm?

It is the practice of getting a firm named and cited inside AI generated answers, by making it a source an assistant can read confidently and a name that directories, business media and professional profiles all corroborate in the same way. The shift matters because a legal question increasingly returns one explanation and a short list.

Being absent from that list is invisible in a way that ranking fourth never was. A client who has their answer rarely goes back to the results page.

How is GEO different from SEO for a practice?

SEO wins a position on a results page while GEO wins the mention inside a generated answer, and the second depends far more on what other sources say about your firm and your lawyers than on what you publish yourself. They share foundations and we run them together.

See SEO for Legal. Most firms get more from the pair than from either on its own.

Where do assistants get their information about a firm?

From the places they can read and check, which for a practice means your own site and its structured data, the legal directories, the business and financial press, professional networking profiles and anything written about your individual lawyers. That is why GEO is never only an on site job.

If those sources disagree about your offices, your practice areas or who works for you, a model tends to name a firm it is surer about. Correcting the disagreement is usually the first week of work.

Does the jurisdiction question really come up that often?

It comes up more than any other, because a client with a contract, employment or property matter is usually asking an assistant what their position is before they ask who should handle it, and the position depends on which system the matter sits in. An assistant answering it has to lean on somebody who explained it well.

That is the opening. A firm that publishes a clear, correct explanation of the difference gives a model something specific to cite and a reason to name the source.

Should we be optimising the firm or the lawyers?

Both, and the lawyers are usually the neglected half, because an assistant asked to recommend somebody for a specific kind of matter is looking for a named individual it can corroborate rather than for a brand it has heard of. A firm with anonymous people gives a model nothing to return.

It is also what the client does next. Somebody who gets a name from an assistant goes straight to checking that person, so the two pieces of work are really one.

How do you measure AI visibility for a firm?

Through tracked question monitoring, which means agreeing the questions a client actually asks before they instruct anybody, then checking across the assistants whether and how your firm and your lawyers are named in the answers over time. We tie it back to enquiries rather than present a citation count as a result.

Where the attribution cannot honestly be closed we say so. A long instruction cycle rewards honest measurement more than a flattering dashboard.

Is it worth doing when so few people search for lawyers this way?

The behaviour we are optimising for is not searching for a lawyer, it is asking an assistant to explain a problem, and that is now among the most common things anybody does with a legal question before they speak to a human being. The firm cited in that explanation is in the room first.

We would also rather be honest about the ceiling. This is positioning work in a market with modest volume, and it is worth doing because one matter is worth a great deal, not because the numbers are large.
