Digital PR for law firms, where the lawyer is the story

Legal coverage is almost never about a firm. An editor wants a named lawyer with a view on something that has just happened, and digital PR is the work of making sure the lawyer they call is one of yours, then making that coverage do something for your search presence as well as your reputation.

    Why a specialist

Law firm digital PR is not generalist digital PR

Digital PR for a practice is expert commentary rather than product news. The business and financial press in this market runs a steady stream of stories that need a lawyer to explain what they mean, and the firms that appear in those stories are the ones with named people who are reachable, quotable and quick. That earns three things at once: the mention a client reads, the authority link behind it, and the corroboration an AI assistant leans on when somebody asks it to recommend a firm. It is one of the disciplines on our digital PR offer, run for the practices in our legal work.

The useful local angle is the one nobody outside the market explains well. The mainland, the DIFC and ADGM are separate systems, which means almost any commercial development has more than one answer, and a lawyer who can set that out clearly is a far better source than one who can only describe their own practice. That is an editorial advantage before it is a marketing one.

    How the work runs

Agree the spokespeople, then be useful quickly

We start by agreeing who speaks and on what, because the single biggest reason a firm is absent from the coverage is that nobody knew which partner to ask or how fast they would reply. Then the profiles those quotes will send readers to are corrected, since a quote that leads to a thin biography wastes the placement.

After that the programme runs on real developments and defensible data, pitched narrowly to the titles your clients actually read rather than to everybody. We report on the relevance and authority of what is earned rather than on a placement count. Talk to our team about which publications are quoting your competitors instead of you.

    Questions

    Law firm digital PR, answered

What is digital PR for a law firm?

The practice of earning coverage and authoritative links by making your lawyers the people editors call when they need something explained, which in this market means commentary on live commercial developments rather than announcements about the firm itself. It earns the mention a client reads and the authority link behind it together.

It increasingly earns a third thing, which is the corroboration an AI assistant uses when somebody asks it to recommend a firm. Those three arrive together or not at all.

Is a new partner or an office opening a story?

Rarely outside your own firm, because an appointment matters enormously to the people it affects and almost not at all to a reader who has never heard of either party, which is why those releases so seldom run anywhere useful. They are worth publishing on your own site and little more.

What does run is a named lawyer explaining something that has just happened. The appointment becomes useful only once that person is quotable.

How quickly do we need to respond to a journalist?

Faster than most firms are structured to manage, because a reporter working on a story that day will take the first competent answer they receive and a reply that arrives the following morning is simply a reply that arrives too late. Agreeing that in advance is most of the work.

We set up who can speak, on what, and what they can say without a further sign off. Firms that do this get quoted repeatedly and firms that do not almost never get quoted twice.

What should our lawyers actually talk about?

The things a business audience is already dealing with and cannot get a clear answer on, which in this market very often means which system a matter falls into, since the mainland, the DIFC and ADGM each produce a different answer. A lawyer who can set that out plainly is a genuinely useful source.

That is an editorial advantage before it is a marketing one. It is also very difficult for a firm outside this market to imitate.

How is digital PR different from link building?

Digital PR earns coverage and the links that come with it through commentary and stories, while link building is the broader discipline of growing authority, including the directories, listings and professional profiles that will never be a story. They overlap and we run both.

See Link Building for Legal. For most practices the two are planned as one authority programme.

    How do you measure it?

On the relevance and authority of the coverage earned, the links that come with it, the named searches that follow a quote and the enquiries that eventually arrive, rather than on how many placements were counted in a month. A placement count flatters everybody and tells you nothing.

For a practice we also watch whether the coverage puts you into the guides and directories an assistant quotes, since that is increasingly where a recommendation comes from.

Does this work for a smaller practice?

Often better than it works for a large one, because a small firm can decide who speaks in a single conversation and respond to a journalist within the hour, which is precisely what the larger firms are structurally unable to do. Speed and clarity beat size in this discipline.

What a smaller practice has to accept is a narrower territory. Owning two subjects completely is far more achievable than being quoted on everything.
