The client

A prize competition operator whose inventory expires

UK Carp Tech runs online prize competitions for carp anglers, offering premium tackle from brands such as Fox, Nash and Shimano through regular live draws, operating at ukcarptech.com.

It is a specialist prize competition operator, and each competition is a time-limited product page: it goes live, sells tickets, draws a winner and closes. That makes the site unusual from an SEO perspective. Most of its indexable inventory has a shelf life of days or weeks, so the site cannot rely on the slow accumulation of ranking pages that a conventional retailer enjoys.

The business is owned and run by Alex McCarthy and Roy, who had already worked with Absolute Digital Media on the brand’s paid social programme. The brief for organic was different: reduce the dependence on Meta as the sole acquisition channel and give the brand a search presence that compounds rather than resets. Absolute Digital Media has managed the brand’s search presence alongside its paid social programme, with the objective of building an owned organic channel that does not depend on media spend.

01 The choice

Treat the site as two distinct assets

We treated the site as two distinct assets. The permanent layer, the homepage and the competitions hub, would own the category terms and hold the site’s authority. The rotating layer, the individual competition pages, would be engineered to rank quickly for the exact product names anglers search for, then pass their accumulated signals back into the hub when they closed. Treating a site with expiring inventory as one undifferentiated estate means the authority it earns leaves with every draw that closes.

02 The choice

Target the exact product name on every competition page

Each competition page was built around the full product name and model as anglers actually type it, with structured content that matched retailer product pages on relevance while offering something they could not: the chance to win it. Anglers search for the specific model they want, and building the page around that full name is what let a low-authority domain take page-one positions against retailers, as with “fox brew kit” moving from position 78 to 7.

03 The choice

Make the competitions hub the permanent authority anchor

The /competitions/ page was developed into the site’s authority anchor, targeting category and brand-plus-competition terms and internally linked from every live page. A hub that every live competition points into is the one page on a site like this that can accumulate rather than reset, which is why the category positions sit there and on the homepage rather than on inventory that is about to retire.

04 The choice

Handle every closure rather than let the rankings die with the draw

Closed competition pages were redirected or consolidated so ranking signals flowed to the hub and to the next live competition for the same product line, rather than being lost. Separating the permanent authority layer from the rotating competition layer meant closed pages stopped leaking value: the homepage moved from position 7 to position 1 for “uk carp” while product pages continued to turn over beneath it.

05 The choice

Build the authority before the traffic push, not alongside it

A sustained programme grew referring domains from angling, competition and lifestyle publishers, lifting the domain’s authority to a level where product pages could compete. Quadrupling referring domains ahead of the traffic push gave those pages the standing to rank inside a competition’s live window rather than after it had closed, which on a site whose inventory expires is the difference between a ranking that converts and one that arrives too late to matter.

What the campaign achieved

Organic traffic reached its highest level on record in August 2026. Semrush records 1,546 monthly organic visits in August 2026, up from 955 in September 2023 and 1,176 in August 2025, a rise of 62% across the three-year window and 31% year on year. The estimated value of that traffic, what the same visits would cost through paid search, rose from $816 to $2,826 a month over the same twelve months, an increase of 246%.

Traffic value grew far faster than the visit count, which reflects a shift toward higher-intent product terms. The Ahrefs UK dataset, which is more sensitive to short-lived competition pages, shows the shape of the growth phase most clearly: monthly organic visits climbed from 162 in March 2024 to 998 in May 2025, an increase of 516% in fourteen months, with the estimated traffic value rising from $64 to $237 a month.

Authority

Referring domains, the number of separate websites linking to ukcarptech.com, quadrupled across the programme. Ahrefs records 23 live linking domains in March 2024 and 94 by October 2025, growth of 309%, with the count rising in every quarter of that period.

Rankings

Page-one keyword count rose from 10 in March 2024 to 36 in May 2026, an increase of 260%. The gains that matter most are on the permanent layer, where the homepage now holds position one for the site’s core category term, and on product terms where competition pages are outranking tackle retailers. The homepage moved from position 7 to position 1 for “uk carp” and from 25 to 7 for “carp uk”, the competitions hub held position 6 for “carp competitions”, and competition pages took position 7 for “fox brew kit” from 78, position 4 for “new direction tackle box” from unranked and position 6 for “fox session table with storage” from unranked.

What UK Carp Tech say

Frequently asked questions

SEO for expiring inventory, answered

How do you do SEO for a site whose pages keep expiring?

By separating the permanent pages that hold authority from the temporary pages that capture demand, and by handling every closure so ranking signals are consolidated rather than lost. On UK Carp Tech the homepage and the competitions hub were built to own the category terms while individual competition pages turned over beneath them.

Can a small brand outrank tackle retailers for product terms?

Yes, where the page matches the exact product name and model and the domain has enough referring domains to be taken seriously. UK Carp Tech holds page-one positions for Fox, Nash and New Direction product terms against established retailers, with “fox brew kit” moving from position 78 to 7.

Why did traffic value grow faster than traffic?

Because the mix shifted toward product and competition terms with commercial intent. Those clicks cost more to buy through paid search, so their organic equivalent is worth more. Monthly visits rose from 1,176 to 1,546 year on year while the estimated value of that traffic rose from $816 to $2,826, an increase of 246%.

How does organic fit alongside paid social?

Paid social drives volume during a competition’s live window. Organic captures the anglers already searching for the product, at no media cost, and keeps working between campaigns. The brief for organic on this account was explicitly to reduce dependence on a single paid platform.

How is the data measured?

Traffic and value figures are third-party estimates from Semrush and Ahrefs, stated with their source and date. Ranking positions are Ahrefs UK best-position data on the dates given. Semrush and Ahrefs report different absolute visit levels here because the Ahrefs dataset is more sensitive to short-lived competition pages, so figures are never blended between them.

Do referring domains still decide whether a small site can compete?

In retailer-dominated product results, yes. The domain started the period with 23 live linking domains and almost no page-one visibility beyond its own brand name. Growing that to 94 by October 2025, a rise of 309% with the count increasing in every quarter, is what raised the site to a level where its product pages could be taken seriously against retailers.

What happens to a competition page's rankings when the draw closes?

Left alone, they are lost with the page. Handled properly, they are consolidated: closed pages were redirected or consolidated so their signals flowed to the competitions hub and to the next live competition for the same product line. That handling is the reason the permanent layer kept gaining while the rotating layer kept turning over.

Acquisition resting on one paid channel?

If your acquisition depends on a single paid channel, the conversation worth having is about what happens to your revenue when that channel’s cost rises. Organic search is the only channel that compounds, and we build it for retail and ecommerce brands that need it to work in competitive, retailer-dominated search results.
