Social for schools, for an audience that changes every year

A school feed that speaks only to current parents is speaking to the one group that has already chosen you. The families who will fill next year’s places are arriving in the country now, know almost nobody and are forming an impression from whatever they can see, which makes social the closest thing to a campus visit before the campus visit.

    Why a specialist

Education social media is not generalist social media

Social for an institution has two jobs that pull in opposite directions, and most accounts only do the first. One is community, which is the current parents, the events and the ordinary rhythm of the place. The other is acquisition, which is reaching families who have never heard of you, are new to the country and are trying to work out what a school is actually like from the outside. An organic feed built entirely for the first audience reaches almost none of the second, which is where paid comes in. It is one of the disciplines on our social media offer, run for the institutions in our education work.

The audience also refreshes faster here than almost anywhere. A following built across several years is partly made up of families who have already moved on, so reach that looks healthy can be pointing at people who will never enrol. We plan the paid side around the admissions windows and the organic side around giving a stranger a true impression of the place, with a route to booking a visit on anything meant to fill one.

    How the work runs

Separate the two audiences, then buy the reach

The first thing we do is separate community from acquisition, because they are different audiences wanting different things and an account trying to serve both at once usually serves only the people who have already enrolled. Current parents get the events, the reminders and the ordinary rhythm. Prospective families get an honest picture of what a day there looks like, a clear answer to what you teach and who you take, and an obvious route to booking a visit.

Then the paid side is timed to the run up to a window rather than spread flat, because that is when a stranger is open to being persuaded. Reporting runs on tours booked rather than on followers, and we will tell you when a rising follower count is not reaching anybody who can enrol. Questions

    Education social media, answered

What does education social media cover?

The organic presence that shows a family what the place is genuinely like, and the paid activity that puts it in front of parents who have never heard of you, timed to the weeks when they are actually choosing a school.

It also covers the parts most institutions leave loose. Replies, enquiries arriving by message, and the open day promotion that usually gets booked far too late.

Our follower count keeps growing. Why is that not enough?

Because a following built across several years in a market with this much population turnover is partly families who have already left and largely families who have already enrolled, which makes it a measure of your community rather than of your reach.

The useful question is how many of them could still take a place. It is usually a much smaller number.

Should we be posting for current parents or prospective ones?

Both, but deliberately rather than by accident, because the two want different things and a feed that mixes them tends to drift towards the audience that engages most, which is always the parents who are already there.

We separate the two and plan them on different rhythms. One follows the school week, the other follows the admissions window.

Is paid social necessary or can organic do it?

Organic will not reach a family that has just arrived in the country and does not know your name, because there is nothing for the algorithm to connect them to you with, which is the whole acquisition problem in one sentence.

So paid does the reaching and organic does the convincing. Running only one of the two is the most common gap we find.

What should we actually be posting?

The ordinary day rather than the highlights, because a parent who has never set foot in the country is trying to work out what it feels like to be a child in your building and a polished prospectus photograph tells them almost nothing.

The specific beats the impressive every time. A normal Tuesday is more persuasive than a gala.

When should the open day promotion start?

Considerably earlier than most schools begin it, because a family needs time to see you more than once, talk it over at home and compare you with two or three others before they will give up a weekend morning.

A fortnight is rarely enough. The promotion is planned backwards from the date rather than forwards from whenever the poster is ready.

Which platforms matter for an institution here?

The visual ones carry most of the discovery work, because a parent is forming an impression of a place rather than reading an argument, and the paid formats on those platforms are also the fastest way to reach a catchment before a window.

We would rather run two properly than five badly. Social pairs directly with our SEO for Education work.
