The client

A direct lender in the most restricted market in UK financial services

Fast Loan UK is an FCA-authorised direct lender offering short-term loans of up to £2,000 to UK borrowers, with dedicated pages for payday, short-term, same-day, instant, emergency and direct lender loans, and a loan-amount range from £100 to £2,000. It lends its own money, which makes organic position on the loan-type pages the business’s primary source of applications.

The market is the most restricted in UK financial services marketing. Google limits high-cost short-term credit advertising, brokers and aggregators bid the remaining inventory to the margin, and mainstream publishers decline commercial coverage of the category outright. A direct lender that wants applications at a sustainable cost has to earn its position, and the link profile is the largest external input into whether it does.

The results

306 referring domains at DR 50+, four pages at position one

Ahrefs referring domain counts are live dofollow domains not flagged as spam, excluding sitewide placements. Starting points are the readings at the programme’s opening checkpoint. Page-level referring domain counts were not tracked at that checkpoint and are shown as reached values only. Both Ahrefs and Semrush are cited so each claim can be checked against a second source.

01 Decision one

Build to the loan-type pages, not the homepage

Target URLs were the six loan-type pages, prioritised by search volume and competitive gap: payday loans first, then short-term, same-day, instant, emergency and direct lender. Links were placed on those URLs directly. The rejected alternative was to continue building to the homepage and rely on internal linking, the default for lenders, and why lender homepages rank and their product pages do not. The payday loans page holds page one because it holds 265 referring domains of its own.

02 Decision two

Pitch personal finance expertise, not credit

Outreach angles were built on budgeting, pay and employment, cost-of-living and small business finance commentary, all written to be compliant as financial promotions. That is content business, HR and regional desks run weekly, and it is how BM Magazine, HR News, London Loves Business, Nation.Cymru and The Edinburgh Reporter came to link to a lender. The rejected alternative was product-led outreach (rate comparisons, loan guides and offer round-ups): publishers will not run them for high-cost credit, and the ones that would are the ones the disavow file exists for.

03 Decision three

Make the explainers the linkable assets

Plain-English guides to pay, tax and household finance were built on the site as reference resources. The gross and net pay explainer now holds position one for what is net pay, and pages of that kind earn the links a loan page never will, then pass the equity through internal links. The rejected alternative was to spread content effort across a high-volume blog calendar: volume produces pages that rank for nothing and earn nothing, and one explainer that a journalist cites outperforms a year of posts.

04 Decision four

Hold a DR 50 bar and curate the profile

Reported placements were dofollow editorial links from domains at DR 50 or above, screened for relevance and spam signals, with the disavow file reviewed against every crawl. The rejected alternative was to report the raw referring domain total: in high-cost credit it grows on its own and it flatters a chart. The curated count is smaller and it is the one that moved the loan pages.

The results

Position one on the highest-intent terms in the category

The link profile is the result the programme owns outright. From a Domain Rating of 40, Fast Loan UK holds 306 live dofollow referring domains at DR 50 or above and 78 at DR 70 or above, and Domain Rating reached 60, a band the site has held since.

The homepage holds position one for quick loans, quick loan, fast loan and small loans instantly. Across the site, UK terms in the top three rose from 720 to 2,233 at the latest reading, with a high of 2,873. Ahrefs UK organic traffic rose from 44,933 to 84,991, with a high of 120,768. Semrush corroborates independently, with UK organic keywords at a record 11,520 from 4,038 and UK organic traffic reaching 106,286 from 50,406.

For a lender that lends its own money, direct lender terms are the highest-intent queries in the category. Holding position one for direct lender loans, loan direct lender and direct loan lenders on a single page is the programme’s clearest commercial result. Ranking and traffic movement is shared with on-site SEO and the digital PR campaigns; the Fast Loan UK digital PR case study reports the campaign coverage and AI citation footprint.

What Fast Loan UK say

Frequently asked questions

Link building for lenders and regulated financial services, answered

What did link building own on this account, and what does the digital PR page own?

Link building owned the always-on acquisition of editorial links to Fast Loan UK’s loan-type pages and the authority metrics that follow: 306 live dofollow referring domains at DR 50 or above, 78 at DR 70 or above, and Domain Rating from 40 to 60. The digital PR campaigns for the same lender earned the largest single bursts of coverage and the AI citation footprint, and are reported on their own page. Rankings and traffic are the shared outcome and this page says so.

Why build links to loan-type pages rather than the homepage?

Because a lender is paid on the page a borrower applies from. Payday loans, short-term loans, emergency loans and direct lender loans each have their own URL, their own query cluster and their own competitors. Building 265 referring domains onto the payday loans page and 213 onto the short-term loans page is why those URLs hold page one against lenders and brokers with far larger brand budgets.

How do you build links for a short-term lender when publishers will not touch the category?

By giving them personal finance expertise rather than a loan product. Budgeting guidance, cost-of-living commentary and pay and employment explainers are content business and finance desks run every week. BM Magazine, HR News, London Loves Business, Nation.Cymru and The Edinburgh Reporter linked to Fast Loan UK because the contribution was useful, not because it was a lender.

How many links a month, and at what bar?

The reported bar was DR 50, dofollow, editorial, with every domain named on the monthly report. 306 live referring domains at that bar is the count that matters. High-cost credit attracts unsolicited and paid-link offers at a rate that would swamp any monthly chart, so volume was never the target.

Does link building matter for an FCA-regulated lender when paid search is available?

It matters more than the paid channel. Google restricts high-cost short-term loan advertising, competitors bid the head terms to a level that makes paid acquisition marginal, and organic position on the loan-type pages is where a direct lender earns applications at a cost the business can hold. The link profile is the largest external input into that position.

How do you keep a lender's link profile clean?

By reporting only what clears the bar and reviewing the disavow file against every crawl. The reported profile excludes anything flagged as spam, anything sitewide, and anything below DR 50. What the report shows is what a competitor would want.

What happened to rankings and traffic?

The homepage reached position one for quick loans, quick loan, fast loan and small loans instantly. The direct lender page reached position one for direct lender loans, loan direct lender and direct loan lenders. The emergency loans page reached position one for emergency loans and quick loan for bad credit. The payday loans page reached position one for payday loans uk direct lender and best payday loans uk. UK terms in the top three rose from 720 to 2,233 at the latest reading, with a high of 2,873, and Ahrefs UK organic traffic from 44,933 to 84,991, with a high of 120,768. Semrush tracks UK organic keywords at a record 11,520 from 4,038.

Can you run the same programme for other lenders and brokers?

Yes. Absolute Digital Media runs link building across FCA-regulated lending, credit broking, insurance and comparison, and the method is the same: build to the product pages, pitch expertise the desks want rather than a product they will not run, make the explainers the assets that earn, and hold a bar that survives an update.

Restricted in paid, refused by the press?

If your category is restricted in paid media and refused by mainstream press, your link profile is not a supporting channel; it is the channel. The conversation worth having is about which product pages need to hold authority and what publishers would actually run.
