We've worked with a few agencies over the years, but this was the first time we saw real results in weeks, not months. The strategy was sharp, the delivery was tight, and we're now hitting organic goals we didn't think were possible. Top marks all around.
From 487 to 18,049 monthly organic sessions for SWAY Hair Extensions
From 487 to 18,049 monthly organic sessions and Domain Rating from 8 to 54. A page for every extension method, and the authority built to defend them.

What did Absolute Digital Media achieve for SWAY Hair Extensions?
Absolute Digital Media's SEO campaign for SWAY Hair Extensions delivered 18,049 monthly organic sessions (from 487), 54 Domain Rating (from 8, still climbing), +102% organic revenue year on year (first six months) and +89% ecommerce conversion rate (first six months).

A salon professional brand built through stylists, not advertising
SWAY launched into the UK salon professional market with nineteen shades sourced from India. It now offers eight extension methods, forty-nine natural colour blends and a haircare line, sits in roughly three thousand salons across the UK, Middle East, USA and Australia, and has funded tens of thousands of trees through a One Tree Planted partnership.
The brand was built through stylists rather than through advertising, which produced deep credibility in salons and a search presence still to be built. The commercial question was whether a business that had grown on professional word of mouth could win a category contested by consumer ecommerce brands who had been optimising for it for years. SWAY chose to contest it.
From 487 sessions to 18,049, Domain Rating 8 to 54
Six-month figures are drawn from the client’s reporting. Traffic and Domain Rating figures are from Ahrefs Site Explorer, UK database. Both sources agree on direction and scale.

The choices that shaped the account

A page per method, not a category page
Hair extensions are not one product, they are a set of application methods, and the buyer has almost always chosen the method before they choose the brand. A stylist searching “nano bond hair extensions” has made a technical decision about application and is looking for a supplier who does it properly. A consumer searching “clip in extensions” wants something entirely different. We built a properly constructed page for each method: nano bonds, weft, tape-in, clip-in, tape weft, flat weft. Nano bonds ranks first on 4,500 monthly searches, weft second on 3,100, tape-in third on 5,100, clip-in third on 2,800. The rejected alternative was concentrating everything on “hair extensions” at 26,000 monthly searches, the most contested and least qualified term in the category.

Extend the structure to length and colour
The same reasoning was applied downwards: length pages for 18, 20, 22 and 24 inch, and colour pages for specific shades. These are attribute searches that a filtered product listing cannot rank for, because a filter is a URL parameter rather than a page. Building them as real pages captures buyers who arrive knowing exactly what they want, and they convert at the highest rate on the site because the specification is already settled.

Build authority rather than route around it
This account is the one where link acquisition was decisive rather than supporting, and the diagnosis is the skill. At a Domain Rating of 8, no amount of page quality carries a commercial term against competitors sitting several times higher; below that threshold the page is not competing yet, and above it, structure and content decide the outcome. Judging where the threshold sits in a given category is the difference between a productive year and a wasted one. Domain Rating moved from 8 to 54 across the engagement, built on niche-relevant placements rather than volume, which is why the profile has continued to strengthen since rather than decaying.

Front-load the work
Technical remediation, URL and metadata fixes, UX wireframes and priority content all landed in the first two months, with content rollout across collections through months three and four, and link acquisition and CRO testing from month five. Foundational work produces nothing visible on its own, which is why it usually gets spread across a campaign and never finishes. Compressed into the opening phase, everything after it compounds rather than being capped by it, and it is why the client reported real movement in weeks rather than quarters.

Fix the path to checkout alongside the rankings
Navigation, layout and the product page to cart flow were redesigned in parallel with the SEO work rather than after it. Conversion rate rose 89% on the client’s reporting. Traffic growth multiplied against a conversion rate improvement is what produced the revenue figure, and running the two together rather than sequentially is what made the six-month numbers possible.
Who ran what
SEO strategy, led by Ben Austin
Ben made the structural call, a ranking page per method rather than a catch-all category, and the authority diagnosis that shaped the budget: at Domain Rating 8 the constraint was the link profile, so acquisition led rather than supported. The front-loaded sequencing and the decision to run CRO in parallel with the rankings are why the six-month reporting shows revenue rather than just sessions.
Content, led by Alex Stott
Alex’s team built the method estate: a substantive page for each application method written to serve the stylist’s technical decision and the consumer’s format decision, then the length and colour pages beneath them and the SWAY Academy training content. Each page explains the method properly rather than selling at it, which is why the estate ranks all the way down the structure.
Digital PR and outreach, led by Jack Hawtin
Jack ran the acquisition that decided this campaign, taking Domain Rating from 8 to 54 through niche-relevant beauty, hair and lifestyle placements rather than volume. Every placement was earned against the method pages doing the commercial work, and the composition is why the profile has kept strengthening after the campaign rather than decaying. On this account the link building was the difference between competing and not existing.
Technical SEO, led by Shofiur Rahman
Shofiur delivered the compressed opening phase: crawl, speed and indexation engineered to category standard, URL and metadata rebuilt across the estate, and the internal architecture that lets the method, length and colour pages each rank in their own right. The UX wireframes for the redesigned product page to cart flow came from the same phase, so the conversion work and the technical work shipped as one build.
Who worked on this account
What the campaign achieved
Organic traffic grew from 487 to a peak of 19,253 monthly sessions on Ahrefs Site Explorer, UK database, and currently runs above 18,000. Domain Rating grew from 8 to 54 and has continued climbing since the campaign. Within the first six months, the client reported organic sessions up 146%, ecommerce conversion rate up 89% and organic revenue up 102% year on year, with “hair extensions” moving from position 12 to 2, tape extensions from 67 to 4 and nano bond extensions from 21 to 1. The client reporting and the Ahrefs data agree on direction and scale.
The pattern holds all the way down the structure. Method pages, length pages, colour pages and the training academy each rank in their own right, which is what a properly built attribute architecture produces and what a filtered product listing never will.
| Page | Lead keyword | Monthly volume | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nano bonds | nano hair extensions | 4,500 | 1 |
| Tape weft | tape weft hair extensions | 600 | 1 |
| Flat weft | flat weft hair extensions | 200 | 1 |
| Finance | pay monthly hair extensions | 200 | 1 |
| Weft hair extensions | weft hair extensions | 3,100 | 2 |
| SWAY Academy | hair extension courses | 700 | 2 |
| 18 inch extensions | 18 inch hair extensions | 1,100 | 2 |
| Tape-in extensions | tape in hair extensions | 5,100 | 3 |
| Clip-in extensions | clip in extensions | 2,800 | 3 |

What DTC and specialist retail brands should take from this
What SWAY Hair Extensions say
Ecommerce SEO, answered
Should an ecommerce site build one category page or a page per product type?
A page per type wherever the buyer chooses the type before the brand. In hair extensions the method is a technical decision made before any supplier is considered, so each method needs its own page. SWAY’s method pages hold first, second and third positions across terms carrying between 600 and 5,100 monthly searches.
Do filtered product listings rank?
Not reliably, because a filter is a URL parameter rather than a page with its own content and intent. Attribute demand, length, colour, size, specification, needs real pages. Those pages also convert well, because the buyer arriving on them has already settled what they want.
When does a site actually need link building?
When authority is truly the constraint rather than the assumed one. Below a certain threshold in a competitive category, a page cannot be assessed on merit because it is not competing yet. SWAY started at a Domain Rating of 8 and finished at 54, and the acquisition was decisive. On a site already above the threshold, the same budget spent on structure and content usually returns more.
How do you decide whether authority or content is the constraint?
By comparing the site against the pages currently holding the positions. Where the gap is authority and the content is comparable, links decide it. Where authority is comparable and the content is not, links change nothing. Checking that before committing a budget is the single most valuable hour in an engagement.
Why front-load technical SEO?
Because it produces no visible result on its own and therefore gets deferred, and everything built afterwards is capped by whatever was not fixed. Compressing it into the opening phase means content and link work compound rather than being limited.
Should CRO run alongside SEO or after it?
Alongside. Revenue is traffic multiplied by conversion rate, so improving both together produces the outcome in half the time. On this account conversion rate rose 89% while sessions rose 146%, and the revenue figure reflects both.
How quickly can a small brand see results?
Movement inside the first quarter is achievable where the work is structural. The client reported results in weeks rather than months here, because the opening phase concentrated on the things that everything else depends on rather than spreading them across the year.
Does SEO work for brands selling to both trade and consumer?
Yes, and the two search differently. Stylists search by method and technical specification, consumers search by look and format. A method-led structure with proper specification depth serves both from the same estate rather than requiring separate sites.
