The client

A broker that wanted to change how borrowing is talked about

Loan Bird is a UK-based loan broker operating across unsecured lending, including products for customers with impaired credit histories.

The business came to Absolute Digital Media with an unusual brief. It wanted digital PR not only to build authority but to change how borrowing is talked about, breaking down the stigma attached to loan applications by putting the brand into mainstream consumer media rather than into finance trade press.

The results

A declining link profile reversed and quadrupled

Referring domain, ranking and traffic figures from Ahrefs Site Explorer, loanbird.co.uk, subdomains mode, United Kingdom. Placement count and average Domain Rating from Absolute Digital Media campaign reporting. Placements marked Ahrefs are verified live in the Ahrefs backlink index; others are recorded in the coverage log. The ranking and traffic movement is the combined result of this programme and the on-site work documented in the Loan Bird SEO case study, which also carries the full traffic and conversion figures; the referring domain growth and the coverage footprint are the direct output of the digital PR work.

01 Decision one

Target lifestyle desks rather than finance desks

Coverage was aimed at entertainment, television, property and consumer lifestyle sections rather than money pages. That is where the brand’s audience already reads, and those desks apply nothing like the scrutiny a finance editor applies to a lender. The rejected alternative was the money and personal finance beat: the obvious target, worked by every bank, building society and comparison site in the country, where a small broker arrives last in the queue with the least to offer.

02 Decision two

Find the financial angle inside stories people already care about

Every campaign started from a cultural subject and worked backwards to the money question inside it. What a television format’s apartments cost to live in. Which streaming subscription gives the best value by genre. What the highest-earning royals are worth. What the top-earning Instagram influencers make. What you need to earn to buy in a given city. The rejected alternative was originating finance topics: a story about money on its own competes with the entire personal finance sector for the same slot.

03 Decision three

Run reactive against entertainment moments, not market news

Reactive commentary was aimed at cultural events rather than financial ones. When the Friends reunion aired, the team analysed which character’s namesake earns the most and set it against the characters’ fictional jobs. The hook was the show; the substance was earnings data. The rejected alternative was reacting to interest rate decisions and economic announcements; every finance brand in the UK does this simultaneously, and the desks already have their preferred commentators.

04 Decision four

Keep the product entirely out of the campaigns

No campaign referenced Loan Bird’s products, rates, eligibility or lending. The brand appeared as the source behind the research and nothing else, which is what kept the programme clear of FCA financial promotions exposure and what made the coverage possible in the first place. In consumer credit that is not a stylistic choice, it is the difference between a publishable story and a compliance problem.

The results

A loan broker on the entertainment pages, without mentioning lending

The scale of movement reflects how far the site had to come. Referring domains rose from 110 to 458, reversing a profile that had been declining for more than a year before the programme began, and the placements arrived on consumer titles at an average Domain Rating of 61.

UK organic traffic compounded as accumulated authority converted, moving from a near-zero start through 766, 1,301 and 4,841 monthly visits to a high point of 13,337. Loan Bird held no UK keywords in the top three at the start and reached 367, with a further 923 in positions four to ten. The commercial terms behind those positions are among the most expensive in UK paid search, which is why organic visibility matters disproportionately in this category.

Two things made the difference. Choosing the wrong desk on purpose: every instinct in finance PR points at the money pages, and that is where a small broker has the least chance and the most competition. And compliance by design rather than by review, because no campaign touched the product, nothing required a financial promotions assessment and nothing stalled in approval.

Publication Market DR Campaign
Manchester Evening News UK 82 Cost of living in a Channel 4 format’s apartments
LINDA Netherlands 76 Wealth of the richest members of the British royal family
The Argus UK 75 What you need to earn to buy a house in Brighton
Essex Live UK 71 Highest-earning Instagram influencers
Daily Express UK n/a Streaming subscription value by genre
MSN UK n/a Watching a major football final for under £20
The Mirror UK n/a Restaurant booking behaviour
Heat World UK n/a Television format property costs
News Break UK n/a Friends reunion earnings analysis

The first four rows are verified live in the Ahrefs backlink index; the remainder are recorded in Absolute Digital Media’s coverage log, which is why no Domain Rating is shown against them. The streaming subscription value study is the clearest example of the method: a money story dressed as an entertainment story, which reached the entertainment pages of a national newspaper without mentioning lending once.

In their words

What Loan Bird say

Frequently asked questions

Digital PR for consumer credit, answered

Can consumer credit brands get national media coverage?

Yes, through lifestyle and consumer angles rather than finance content. Loan Bird reached the Daily Express, MSN, the Mirror and the Manchester Evening News through research on streaming value, event costs and property affordability. National desks will not run a lender’s product content, and they will run its research on what things cost.

How do FCA rules affect digital PR for financial brands?

Financial promotions rules govern anything said about rates, eligibility or outcomes, which removes most product-led content. Campaigns built entirely on consumer research never touch those rules, which means they publish without a compliance cycle. That is a delivery advantage as much as a legal one.

Should finance brands target money pages or lifestyle desks?

Lifestyle desks, in most cases. Personal finance editors are pitched by every bank, comparison site and fintech simultaneously, and a smaller brand arrives last with the least to offer. Entertainment, property and consumer sections reach the same readers with far less resistance and identical link authority.

What kind of campaigns work for a loan broker?

Money questions inside cultural subjects. What a television format’s apartments cost, which streaming subscription gives best value, what the richest royals are worth, what you need to earn to buy in a given city. The subject gets the coverage. The financial analysis gives the brand its credit as the source.

How long does digital PR take to affect rankings?

Six to nine months is realistic before authority converts, and consumer credit takes longer than most categories because the starting authority is usually low and the competitive set is well funded. For Loan Bird, referring domains had to be rebuilt from a declining base before traffic moved at all, after which it compounded from a few hundred visits a month to 13,337 at its high point.

How much does digital PR cost for a financial services brand?

Cost is driven by ideation and research depth rather than outreach volume, because campaigns in regulated finance need a cultural hook and a defensible data set rather than a product angle. Absolute Digital Media scopes retainers against the commercial rankings they are built to win.

Does digital PR help with AI search visibility in finance?

Directly. Language models disqualify lenders and brokers as sources on borrowing questions and assemble answers from consumer publishers instead. Editorial citation on those publishers is the only route into the answer, and it is the same asset that drives the rankings.

How do you measure the results of a digital PR campaign?

Against referring domain growth on titles that matter, commercial ranking movement and organic traffic, not coverage volume. For Loan Bird the measures were referring domains, which rose from 110 to 458, and UK top-three keyword count, which rose from zero to 367. Placement counts are an input. They are not the result.

Does your PR keep dying in compliance review?

If you market consumer credit and your PR keeps dying in compliance review or failing to place, the conversation worth having is about which cultural subjects your audience already reads and what money question sits inside them.
